How to Clean and Maintain Your Area Rugs
The key to maintaining your area rug between cleanings is to vacuum it once a week. Remove all the furniture. Vacuum the top. Flip the rug over and vacuum the back. Flip it back over and vacuum the top again. To clean the fringe of the carpet, use the curtain cleaning tool on your vacuum.
For spills, place a clean white towel or cloth underneath the rug. Using white paper towels or a white cotton cloth, blot the spill until you’ve removed as much of the liquid as possible, working inward from the edges of the stain to keep from spreading the stain. Replace the cloth underneath your rug with a clean, dry cloth. Dip a white cloth into a little club soda or cold water and squeeze it in your hand so it’s damp and not dripping wet. Push the damp cloth into the rug and dry the rug by blotting with a dry towel.
How Often Should I Have My Area Rugs Professionally Cleaned?
Area rugs generally require professionally cleaning only once a year. You may choose to have professional rug cleaning done more often if there is a lot of foot traffic or if there are elderly people, people with respiratory illnesses, children, or pets in the home.
