GUELPH, ON, April 14th, 2011 – The SharpCuts Indie Film & Music Festival is pleased to announce the launch of its fifth year of programming the best in independent film and music from the City of Guelph and around the world. The 2011 SharpCuts will take place Tuesday April 26th till Sunday May 1st, and will this year, again, be adding an additional day of content for festival fans.
The festival will once again kick-off with a night of Comedy. Following in the footsteps of last year’s successful combination of live action laughs and on-screen slapstick, the Comedy Night Kick-Off will get this year’s SharpCuts off on the right foot, just one day earlier on Tuesday, April 26th. Guelph-based improv troupe Players Without Strings will be amongst the comedians present, marking their second year in a row performing at SharpCuts.
Wednesday now brings something utterly unique to the SharpCuts Festival: Webseries Wednesday. Webseries Wednesday will transfer the small screen experience of watching a made-for-internet series, and put it up on the big screen. SharpCuts is one of the few festivals in North America to open itself up to the emerging webseries industry.
Now a SharpCuts institution, this year’s Thursday Night Thriller will feature the usual indie horror shorts and a special secret feature screening courtesy of Anchor Bay Canada. The Guelph Improvised Music Series will also be retuning to the festival with its Friday night program called Freestyle Friday, which this year will feature the trio The Open, made up of musicians Susanna Hood, Kyle Brenders and Scott Thomson. The live music will be preceded by a screening of music videos.
All SharpCuts programs, from Tuesday through Friday, will take place in The Synnema, Guelph’s alternative arts venue, at 121 Wyndham St. N., Suite #106. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thrursday programs begin at 7 pm, Friday’s program begins at 9:30 pm.
On Saturday April 30th, SharpCuts moves to the Bookshelf Cinema for an afternoon program featuring outstanding short subject documentaries and dramas. Several of the filmmakers will be in attendance, and will be available to answer audience questions during Q&A sessions following each set. The Saturday program begins at 1 pm. On Saturday evening, the fun will move to the Fifty West Restaurant at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre for the annual SharpCuts Schmoozefest and Awards Ceremony. Filmmakers and festival organizers will be in on hand to toast the fifth annual SharpCuts celebrations from 9 pm on into the night.
Finally, on Sunday May 1st, SharpCuts will wrap with the screening of the Blended Film Challenge shorts at The Bookshelf. The Blended Film Challenge pits teams of local high school students in a competition to combine three randomly selected film genres into one five-minute film. The screening begins at 1 pm.
The cost for admission to all SharpCuts events is Pay-What-You-Can (PWYC) with a suggested donation of $5. Concessions will be available during most of the programs. We look forward to seeing everyone out at the fifth annual SharpCuts Indie Film and Music Festival.
