How is slate formed?

Slate is known as a metamorphic rock because its formation originates from an existing rock known as shale. That is, the originating rock shale changes its mineral composition by heat and pressure, a process known as crystallization. This new form of rock slate may consist of many minerals such as, mica, chlorite, and quartz. Metamorphic rocks are known to be a harder material than most other types of rocks, hence, giving slate a characteristic known to be more resistant to weathering and erosion. This is what makes slate such an attractive product for applications that will endure harsh conditions.
