Client

National Agency for the Construction and Management of the Great Mosque of Algiers (Agence Nationale de Réalisation et de Gestion de la Mosquée d’Alger), Algiers, Algeria

Scope of Work

Project management assistance for the construction of the Great Mosque of Algiers, located on a 20-hectare site along the coastline of the Bay of Algiers.

Djamaâ El Djazaïr, the Great Mosque of Algiers, will feature a 869-ft. minaret and be able to accommodate up to 120,000 worshippers. As the world’s biggest mosque outside Mecca and Medina, it will be part of an enormous complex including prayer rooms (492 feet X 492 feet X 75 feet in height), a dome (164-ft. diameter) a cultural centre with an amphitheatre (1,500 seats), a library (2,000 seats), an administrative building, a public security office and a school of Koranic studies including residences for 300 students.

In addition to preparing the tender documents and reviewing studies for the project, Dessau is assisting the Agency with project management and work supervision. We have also established a knowledge-transfer process with the client covering work methods and tools.

Challenges

  • Integrate several major considerations, including high seismic risk, stringent security issues, prayer rooms set on seismic isolators, access for high volumes of traffic at peak hours as well as the durability of the materials, height of the building and a design that fuses modernity and authenticity.
