In Canada, only the province of Quebec is subject to Civil Law, having its own Civil Code with ten chapters. These chapters are as follows:

Chapter 1: Persons
(ie: the enjoyment and exercise of basic individual rights, the capacity of persons, privacy, and the rights accorded to legal persons);

Chapter 2: The Family
(ie: filiation, medically assisted procreations, marriage, support, parental authority, adoption);

Chapter 3: Successions
(ie: estates, inheritance, wills);

Chapter 4: Property
(ie: movables, immovables, ownership, usufructs, servitudes, administration of the property of others);

Chapter 5: Obligations
(ie: contract law, civil liability, mandates, partnerships and associations, loans, sales, leases);

Chapter 6: Prior Claims and Hypothecs
(ie: rights of preference, mortgages and sale of land);

Chapter 7: Evidence
(ie: burden of proof, rules on judicial notice, evidence);

Chapter 8: Prescription
(ie: acquisitive prescription, interruption of prescription, and suspension of prescription, extinctive prescription);

Chapter 9: Publication of Right
(ie: registration of property, personal and movable real rights);

Chapter 10: Private International Law
(ie: conflicts of law, international jurisdiction of Quebec authorities, recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments).
