Chronic pain affects 75 million Americans each year, creating challenges in every aspect of life — from overall physical health to emotional and spiritual wellbeing. To find relief, many individuals turn to prescription pain medication. For some, this reliance becomes an addiction, as more and more pills are needed to alleviate pain. For others, the medication causes depression, fatigue and other adverse side effects that hinder day-to-day life. Too often a dependence on pain mediation becomes a vicious cycle, one that can’t be escaped without help.

At the Mission Pacific Coast Recovery can, our caring staff and personalized Pain Track treatment program can help individuals break free from chemical dependency. Together, we’ll discover alternative tools and strategies to manage chronic pain and return our patients to a healthy and productive life.

Admission to the Pain Track Program

The Pain Track is a 30-day minimum inpatient program. Admissions are accepted by appointment, 24–hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. When considered “medically necessary,” the Pain Track is covered by most insurance plans. Inpatient care beyond what is considered medically necessary is elective and the responsibility of the patient.

Alternative Pain Management Strategies

Individualized Pain Track treatment plans may include any of the following alternative strategies for pain management:

Group Psychotherapy — Psychological factors play a key role in how you feel pain. In fact, research shows that negative emotions such as anxiety, sadness or fear can intensify your level of pain. Group psychotherapy allows our patients to address personal issues in their lives in an honest, open and supportive environment with others who share similar problems and concerns. Through talking, listening, exploring and accepting, they can begin to resolve emotional issues and discover a happier, healthier self.

Acupuncture — Long a staple of ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture has gained wide acceptance in Western cultures. The theory behind acupuncture is that pain and disease are the result of disruptions in the patterns of energy flow in the body. Acupuncture techniques work to correct those disruptions and restore health. Studies have shown that acupuncture is highly effective in treating pain and chemical dependency.

Holistic Therapies — In addition to acupuncture, we embrace a wide variety of other holistic therapies to help regain physical and energy balances of the body. These therapies are designed to treat the whole person body, mind and spirit. As patients progress on a personal, healing journey, they will uncover more about their inner self and how to alleviate pain.

Cognitive Therapy — Cognitive therapy is based on the premise that how you think impacts how you feel. By learning how to change negative thoughts and perceptions — specifically those that trigger and prolong stress and unhappiness — and replace them with positive thoughts that more closely reflect reality, physical and emotional well-being can improve.

Guided Imagery — Our mind uses imagery to communicate with our body. These images aren’t just visual, but can be sounds, tastes, smells or a combination of senses. Through focused concentration, patients learn to encourage their body to respond to what they are imagining and react as though it were real. In short, guided imagery allows them to use their mind to tell the body to heal.

Meditation — The ancient art of meditation, in which you focus attention on a single thought, image, or sound, has proven to have positive effects on overall health and wellness. By directing attention away from worries about the future or preoccupation with the past, meditation reduces stress and helps patients feel better.

Therapeutic Breathing — Therapeutic breathing helps stimulate the universal life force within the body, allowing it to circulate freely. Through consciously controlling how one breathes, the patient can relieve chronic pain or ultimately, alleviate it altogether.

Music and Movement — Artistic endeavors, such as poetry, music and dance, can be an entrance to the healing spirit within. When used appropriately, these art forms can help reach extraordinary states of consciousness. This carefully focused attention on a chosen art form has been found to trigger positive changes in emotions, physiology, stress, and pain.

Exercise Groups - Research indicates that regular exercise provides psychological as well as physical benefits. Low impact exercise groups are provided on-site when approved by the medical director. Physical therapists are also available upon physician request.

Patient Praise

Thanks to Dr. Headrick and his team, I was catapulted into a significantly strong start in my recovery and it is something I will never forget and even though it was extremely difficult to be away from my young children for so long, it is something I'll never regret either. So, thank you for 9 months of sobriety and for helping me find the ability to appreciate the life I always had, but took for granted.
