WHITBY — The Judokaa Martial Arts club continues to do great things for a
relatively young club.
Members of the Whitby club recently attended two tournaments, the annual
Budokan Shiai for judo and the 2011 provincial Brazilian jiu jitsu
The provincial event has grown since its inception in 2009, with last year’s
event involving more than 500 competitors over two days. Many clubs from the GTA
as well as Ottawa, Kingston, Oshawa, Barrie, Sudbury, North Bay, London,
Hamilton, Welland, Niagara Falls, Georgetown, Burlington, Guelph and Kitchener
Judokaa had five fighters attend and all five brought home medals, led by
Adam Scott and Candice Driscoll delivering gold. The two fighters entered two
different shiais in different martial arts styles over two days in a row and
both walked away with medals.
Taking silver medals were Miranda Marania and Mateo Valles. Arista Marania,
Judokaa’s smallest warrior of the day, battled it out for a bronze medal.
At the Budokan Shiai, held at Whitby’s Father Leo Austin Secondary School,
Scott, Driscoll and Alyssa Miniotas won silver medals while Kymarae Bristol and
Dieter Baughan failed to place in the top three.
