Healthy eyes and good vision are important to our quality of life. Many assume that good vision means healthy eyes but many ocular health conditions are not accompanied by recognizable symptoms. An annual comprehensive is an essential part of your overall health routine. Your eye doctor can detect such as , and and even overall health problems such as , high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Early diagnosis and treatment are necessary for maintaining a lifetime of good vision.

The minimum recommended frequency of examination recommended by the Canadian Association of Optometry is as follows:

  • Preschooler/School Age (3-19 years) – Annually (covered by OHIP)
  • Adult (20-64 years) – Every one to two years
  • Older adult (65 years and older) – Annually (covered by OHIP)

Many occur without symptoms and early detection is the key to successful treatment in order to prevent complete loss of vision. Our digital retinal camera captures a high resolution photograph of the interior surface of your eye. This retinal image is stored electronically and provides a permanent record which assists the doctor in detecting and monitoring even the most subtle of changes from year to year. Some that can be detected include , , and ocular tumors. Retinal imaging is part of our clinic’s standard for a comprehensive eye examination and is strongly recommended to all of our adult patients.

  • Daily wear contacts
  • Contacts for dry eyes
  • Coloured contacts
  • Bifocal/multifocal contacts
  • Contacts for astigmatism

OHIP covers one major eye exam every 12 months for diabetic patients.

Cataract is a common condition of the eye and develops most frequently due to age-related changes. However, they can also develop due to injuries, health problems and use of certain medications. A cataract is the clouding of the lens located inside your eye, causing your vision to be blurry or hazy and can sometimes cause increased glare or halos at night time.   In the early stages, a change in your eyeglass prescription may improve eyesight. As the cataract “matures”, the eye doctor can recommend and refer you to an eye surgeon to remove the cataract. After surgery, once the vision is stable, a new eyeglass prescription may be required.
