ACUPUNCTURE: Our team provides acupuncture. Acupuncture is a safe and effective alternative to medication as it helps to stimulate the release of endorphins – the body’s natural pain relieving neurohormones and helps promote natural healing. Primary uses are for nausea, pain relief, increasing energy, improved mood, decreasing tissue tension and improving body function. *Acupuncture is part of the physiotherapy treatment and is provided at no extra charge. MANUAL THERAPY: Our team provides hands on one-on-one manual therapy to help effectively treat muscle, joint, fascia, and nerve conditions throughout the body. Manual therapy includes soft tissue release, myofascial release, joint mobilizations, peripheral and spinal manipulations, nerve mobilizations, and various other techniques that are specific to your injury. FCAMPT: Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) have completed extensive post-graduate education in the area of orthopaedics and have achieved internationally-recognized qualifications in hands-on manual and manipulative therapy. As a result, FCAMPT physiotherapists are committed to providing the highest level of patient care as they have attained the knowledge and skills that help enable them to treat complex pathology and other sorts of movement disorders. INTRAMUSCULAR STIMULATION (IMS): Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a total system for the diagnosis and treatment of myofascial pain syndromes, particularly chronic pain conditions that occur without obvious signs of injury or inflammation. IMS heavily relies on an extensive physical examination to identify the signs of neuropathic pain. Often, chronic pain is neurological as opposed to structural, which is why they are often unidentified by X-rays, MRIs, Bone and CT scans. IMS uses acupuncture needles to help penetrate deep within muscle tissue, specifically injured muscles that have contracted and become shortened. CONCUSSION REHABILITATION: Concussions are a significant and growing concern among young individuals in the athletic and non-athletic population. It is perceived that concussions are caused by a “blow to the head” leading to a loss of consciousness. However, concussions may also be caused by acceleration forces such as whiplash and can present with a flurry of symptoms such as but not limited to: “nausea or vomiting, amnesia surrounding an event, ringing in the ears, slurred speech, feelings of pressure in the head, difficulty concentrating, noise and light sensitivity, increased irritability and other personality changes, sleep disturbances and psychological problems including depression.” The typical protocol for post-concussion is to reduce physical and cognitive activity until symptoms dissipate, which usually takes about 7-10 days. However, often re-introducing cognitive, sensory and physical stimulus often takes longer than the initial rest period. Physiotherapy can help to provide early intervention strategies such as education to promote optimal recovery, address dysfunctions in the neck and surrounding areas, vestibular (balance) and visual impairments, and provide safe guidelines for the re-introduction to activity. EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION: Exercise plays a significant role in maintaining optimal physical performance. With a proper combination of strength, flexibility, and proprioception (balance), these can help to maximize body functions and prevent re-injury and safe return to sport. PRE/POST-OP REHABILITATION: Evidence has demonstrated that prehabilitation (strengthening prior to surgery) is effective for short-term post-operative recovery, and in some cases, individuals can avoid having the surgery completely. At Symmetry Physiotherapy + Rehabilitation, we will identify specific areas of focus within your body and provide you with an individualized exercise program to maximize recovery. KINESIO TAPING: Kinesio Taping is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused muscles, provide dynamic support to muscles, and assist in early return to activity.
