Leslie’s formal training in meditation included many years of immersive study with a Buddhist nun, who herself had studied with Namgyal Rimpoche in Tibet. The master-student relationship is an essential part of this practice, a bond not easily attainable in North America. But through Leslie’s apprenticeship and attainment, she is able to pass along to clients the benefits of moment-to-moment non-judgmental awareness – benefits now validated by scientists... For instance, neuroscientists have discovered that certain areas of the brain light up in Buddhists who regularly practice meditation – in particular, it is thought that mindfulness meditation can tame the amygdala, an almond-sized part of the brain linked to a person’s mental and emotional health. In another study using magnetic resonance imaging, Boston researchers found that parts of the brain important for attention and sensory processing, how we take in and make sense of things, were thicker in meditators. Leslie’s own youthfulness and high-energy levels attest to some of the immediate rewards of meditation.
