It means spending money and time on training and safety equipment,
and removing individuals from projects for disciplinary purposes. Commitment
is following through with what we believe in, even when time is short,
or money is tight. The result..
A life saved.
On a Thursday in March, 2005, a form-worker was warned by our Deltera
superintendent for not properly using fall arrest. That same worker
was found the following day again near the edge of the building risking
his life by not securing himself to the building. The superintendent
immediately brought that worker to the office and gave him a final
written notice to either comply with Deltera's safety requirements
or be removed from the project permanently. The worker agreed, and
'promised' to wear and use his fall arrest equipment from there on.
On the following Monday, at 7:05 am, the same individual was at the
edge of the 7th floor hooking up the chains for the fly-form when the
crane operator accidentally lifted the cable knocking the worker off
the 7th floor slab edge. This time the worker was tied-off, and was
left hanging from the slab.
I am confident in saying that our Deltera superintendent saved the
life of this individual, and is very proud of this fact, rather than
facing the cold reality of what could have been. In the past ten years
I have known a lot of companies, and super's that may have said nothing,
and the result would have been devastating.
Again, it's that word commitment, and we truly are.
