A British Columbia lawsuit, commenced on behalf of a 24 year old female prisoner by the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, was recently filed challenging the solitary confinement practice in Canada.

The BCCLA lawsuit comes in the wake of the high profile death of Ashley Smith in October, 2007, who was kept in solitary confinement for most of her one year in prision prior to committing suicide while her guards watched.  This has resulted in an inquest into Ashley's treatment while in prision and the events leading to her death anticipated to proceed in April, 2011.
