My Treatment Philosophy
I believe that therapeutic change occurs through a supportive, caring and trusting relationship building upon a client’s unique strengths and resources. I consider clients to be the experts in their lives, and with support, encouragement, and appropriate interventions, they will find solutions to a wide range of human difficulties.
I practice both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an educational approach to therapy that helps clients overcome their difficulties by changing their thinking, behaviour and emotional responses. It has proven to be clinically effective for a wide variety of problems and disorders. Solution Focused Therapy is style of brief intervention that helps clients focus on solutions to their problems and directs individuals towards living more helpful and satisfying lives.
Assessment and Treatment Services
My practice focuses on treating adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, separation/divorce, self-esteem issues and bereavement. I also offer lifestyle counselling for insomnia and weight management. Psychological assessments are available for mood and anxiety disorders such as panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
My primary responsibility as your therapist is to protect your welfare and to work in your best interests. Everything that we discuss during therapy is confidential except in specific circumstances in which I am ethically and/or legally required to disclose information to the appropriate authorities.
Interactive Video Conferencing
Interactive video calls using Skype technology are available to provide psychological services for clients who are living in remote areas in Northwestern Ontario or for clients who prefer counselling in the privacy of their home.
Fees and Scheduling
Payment for services is an important part of any professional relationship and fulfilling this responsibility demonstrates your commitment to therapy.
The cost of individual therapy is $75 per hour. Approximately 50 minutes is devoted to therapy with the client and 10 minutes for documentation. Payment methods include cash or cheque and are due at the time of each visit. A receipt will be provided for all payments. If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment for any reason, please provide me with at least 24 hours advance notice to avoid being charged for your session.
Poulter Counselling operates as a fee-for-service clinic. Psychological services are not covered by OHIP, but may be partially covered by your extended health insurance plans. If you are intending to use insurance mental health benefits to pay for all or part of your treatment costs, please contact your insurance provider to ensure that your claim will be covered. Please understand that my contract is with you, and not with your insurance company. Clients are encouraged to recognize that there is no better investment than their mental health.
