At Calhoun Super Structures Ltd. we believe that our structures provide the best value to the market through:
- Product Quality
- Form and Function
- Traditional Design
- Aesthetic Appeal
Calhoun early on researched all possible options on the market In Line Galvanizing, Coated (Primer / Painted), Stainless Steel & Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG).
In line galvanized product is used by many fabric building manufacturers even though it was created for the fencing market.
The product has a clear chromate coating (clear organic paint) that is applied on top of the thin galvanizing that is applied during the manufacturing of the tube. The product does very well in salt spray tests as they are really testing the clear organic paint and looking for it to show signs of rust. The problem is the lab tests are done on clean, un-scratched, un-rolled, un-welded product that is not what the customer will be getting in the field. The primer applied inside the tube will also rust very quickly, especially in areas that the primer has been removed (burned away) as is the case at welds. This product should never be used on rolled or welded assemblies.
Red oxide primer and paint was also reviewed, similar to what is used in conventional construction such as Rigid Frames. The primer is chosen as red to help hide rust that will inevitably form. With paint, any coating under 5 mil will have small pin holes that allow moisture to penetrate and eventually form rust. So multiple coatings would need to be applied to ensure adequate coating. This is the least amount of cost but also provides the least protection to the customer and should never be used in caustic environments, such as salt storage and many agricultural applications.
Next to stainless steel, Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG) is the best protection against rust, bar-none. Studies have proven it time and time again. In one study researchers immersed three type of steel in a highly caustic swine manure for eight years. Coated tubing completely disintegrated while Stainless steel lost nothing to corrosion. HDG steel performed nearly as well as stainless steel with 99.4 percent integrity.
After comparing all the options, The Calhoun team quickly determined to hot dip galvanize all of their steel components welds and all. This provides the best, cost-effective system to our customers ensuring longevity to their purchase.
Our structures are found throughout North America and are being used for an ever increasing number of applications.
