Custom made orthotic devices and custom orthotic shoes are part of the services that are provided at the clinic. Orthotics are a custom device that are inserted in ones daily footwear to help alleviate a variety of complaints from low back pain, lower leg problems such as knee and foot ailments such as what is commonly referred to as plantar fascitis. It is an orthopedic appliance or apparatus used to support, align, prevent or correct deformities or to improve the function of the movable parts of the body. Orthotic function is to allow the relaxation of muscle, joint, ligaments or other soft tissue structures. As well, it helps to stabilize a joint to allow more functional movement of more distal joints.
LOW FREQUENCY ALTERNATING CURRENTS
Contraction of innervated muscle by stimulating the nerve that innervates the muscle causes and increase in muscle strength; contraction of smooth muscle; pain relief by release of endorphins and encephalin and reduction of swelling.
TRANSCUTANEOUS ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION (TENS)
TENS is used for the relief of a variety of pain by stimulating the large sensory fibers; interruption of a memory-like loop or chain of neural activity and by a release of endogenous endorphins. TENS can be used in the following pain situations:
- Chronic pain
- Postoperative, Obstetrical and other acute pain
- Intractable pain ie. adequate relief of pain secondary to malignancy
