Lead The Way.ca: Physiotherapy & Injury Rehabilitation

As regulated health care professionals, Physiotherapists at each clinic assess, treat, and help prevent a wide range of medical conditions and injuries. We work at restoring or maintaining our clients' lifestyle and normal activities, whether it be at work, sports, or home. With strong community roots, practitioners in Bridgenorth, Lindsay, Lakefield and Peterborough share a unique understanding of the lifestyle and activities common to residents of the Kawarthas and Central Eastern Ontario.

Physiotherapists focus on:

  • Prevention of injury or illness
  • Rehabilitation from injury, illness, or surgery
  • Achieving better health through education and healthy lifestyle
  • Enhancing performance in sports, at work, or day-to-day activities

The approach taken by your Physiotherapist will depend on the nature of your injury, problem, or circumstances. Beginning with a personalized comprehensive assessment, a treatment strategy is built based on the goals, impairments, and functional challenges assessed during the consultation. Communication is a key component with an emphasis on communicating the approach to the client as well as stakeholders such as physicians, other involved health care professionals, family, insurance companies, and employers.

Approaches to treatment may include some or all of the following:

Acupuncture: used to relieve both acute and chronic pain. Many Physiotherapists are certified in this technique and adhere to the highest regulated standards for practice and safety.

Manual Therapy: hands-on treatment such as joint mobilizations and manipulations as well as soft-tissue techniques designed to decrease pain, restore movement and improve function.

Mechanical and Electrical Modalities: used to relieve pain, muscle spasms, inflammation and swelling, promote wound healing, and increase movement and strength. Examples include hot and cold interventions, mechanical cervical and lumbar traction, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS), interferential current (IFC), muscle stimulation (EMS), LASER and electro-acuscope treatments.

Hydrotherapy: useful as a treatment modality and for low-impact exercise. Our programs in the therapeutic pools at the Peterborough Family YMCA and Lindsay Recreation Centre can help reduce pain and swelling, increase mobility and provide a safe, buoyant, low-impact environment for weight bearing exercise.

Exercise: is typically a part of all treatment strategies. Personalized programs usually include a combination of stretching, strengthening exercises, stability and aerobic conditioning.

Education: All clients are provided education regarding their condition as well as important information and strategies to assist in self-management and prevention of further injury.

A referral for treatment is not required, although most often people are referred for physiotherapy by their physicians, employers, insurance companies, or other regulated health-care professionals. The clinics in Bridgenorth, Lindsay, and Peterborough are well-equipped for the latest therapeutic approaches with the advantage of being located conveniently close to home for most clients. The further advantage of the multidisciplinary setting means that clients can access other complementary health services such as massage, foot care, and orthotics all in one location.
