Oligosaccharides coat the majority of cell surface and circulatory proteins via conjugation to serine, threonine or asparagine. Oligosaccharides are also found conjugated to cell surface lipids. As such, oligosaccharides are involved in a host of processes including but not limited to cellular recognition, cell adhesion, fertilization and immune function – little wonder that oligosaccharides are  now being applied to diagnostic, therapeutic and vaccine development.
