Ottawa Registered Dental Hygienist

Proper dental care is an important part of healthy living. Good oral hygiene (brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and avoiding sugary foods and drinks) plays a large part in maintaining dental health, but regular dental checkups are also important.

A dental check-up is a once-or-twice-yearly procedure designed to detect tooth decay and assess all dental problems before they become emergencies. The check-up has two parts: a scaling and dental prophylaxis performed by dental hygienist and an exam performed by a dentist. If the exam reveals any problems, such as cavities, further dental treatment may be required. Usually, these treatments are performed by the dentist doing the exam.

What to expect from dental hygiene care:

You can expect to receive quality preventive oral hygiene care from a health professional who is registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO).
The dental hygienist will:

  • Update your medical and dental history. Take prescribed dental radiographs.
  • Assess the condition of your teeth and gums and discuss your oral health concerns.
  • Scale the teeth and remove tartar, stains, polish the teeth and do a fluoride remineralisation treatment.
  • Provide a dental hygiene treatment plan that considers disease prevention to achieve optimal health.
  • Assist you in ways to maintain your oral health.
  • Explain how dental hygiene care can help maintain a healthy mouth and body.

This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab.
