Weekend Literacy Institute for K–12 Educators


All teachers and school leaders face a puzzle: how can we meet today's standards, while still offering students authentic, engaging learning? How can we build the knowledge kids need for high stakes tests, and at the same time grow thoughtful, curious, lifelong learners? In short: how can we have the rigor -- without the mortis? Join us in Santa Fe to find solutions, as we connect students' curiosity to the curriculum.

Inquiry works. A thick file of recent research confirms that students taught the inquiry way -- whether through rich thematic studies, integrated units, problem- or project-based learning, or inquiry circles -- achieve more than kids taught the "lecture-test" paradigm (Darling-Hammond, 2008). In this two-and-a-half-day day institute, we'll dig into the dynamics that make these models work and adapt them to your classroom, school, and district.

The sixth in our "Reading the City" Institutes, this will be a lively, practical, hands-on program. We'll approach content area reading and writing from all angles: the research and theory guiding us; the tools and structures teachers need; ways of finding just-right texts for a range of kids; specific lessons that build kids' understanding; how to create units of study that engage kids and enact the standards; and all the choices we have in arranging time, space, materials, books, and kids.

Program Structure

The program offers a compelling mix of keynote sessions, breakout workshops, and "homerooms." To ensure that the ideas presented apply to everyone's work back home, we'll spend part of each day in job-alike groups: high school, middle, intermediate, and primary, and leadership.

So that we understand all these inquiry practices from the inside, we will do them together, in real time. We'll also view video clips of classrooms around the country to deepen our understanding. And each participant will join a team of colleagues in an inquiry project, drawing on the extraordinary sights, sounds, people and history of Santa Fe itself.

About the Presenters

Harvey Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. He is the author of 17 books on teaching, including Subjects Matter: Every Teachers' Guide to Content Area Reading, Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action, and Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in the Student-Centered Classroom.

As a teacher at Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Illinois, Nancy Steineke has witnessed firsthand the potential of collaborative, performance-based learning in extending and refining student knowledge. She is the author of Assessment Live!, Text and Lessons for Content-Area Reading, and Content-Area Writing.

Jeff Anderson, known to his legions of fans as "The Write Guy," brings excitement and humor to teaching the craft of editing, and to the practical study of grammar. He is the author of several books and videos, including Mechanically Inclined and Everyday Editing.

Lynette Emmons graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She went on to earn her Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and Ed.D in Adult Learning at National-Louis University. A former Chicago Public Schools teacher and currently Director of The Center for City Schools, Lynette has for the past twelve years been involved with classroom consulting, staff development workshops and leadership development for Elementary and High Schools around the country.
