In this day-long workshop, Lucy Calkins, Founding Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and Mary Ehrenworth, Deputy Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, will work together to help you understand the implications of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for instruction and to help you devise a plan for aligning your reading, writing, and content-area instruction to the CCSS.

Lucy and Mary will show ways in which your reading and writing workshop instruction is already aligned to the CCSS, and they will guide you to see steps you can take to revise your literacy curriculum so that it supports the new dimensions of learning called for in the standards. Above all, Lucy and Mary will show you how to teach the higher levels of comprehension and composition skills called for by the standards-teaching students to compare and contrast, to theorize and analyze, to interpret and to think critically. You will learn how to plan for instruction not only in narrative writing but also in argument and information writing, and not only in fiction but also in nonfiction reading.

Although the Common Core State Standards can overwhelm many, Lucy and Mary will help you see the underlying infrastructure and the principles that, once grasped, make the CCSS more comprehensible. They will help you see the incremental nature of the spiral curriculum, and look across the genres of writing and kinds of reading students are expected to do in order to understand the essential underlying skills.

Specifically, Lucy and Mary will help you think about a spiral curriculum in opinion/argument writing, and ways you can use performance assessments to track and support students' progress along that continuum. They will show you ways to develop this work in language arts and also in science and social studies.

This workshop will also help you think also about a spiral curriculum in interpretation and critical reading, showing you ways to teach students to think about plot and characters and also about ideas, and ways to use writing as a tool to support higher level comprehension.

Implicit in all this work will be discussions about the process of school wide reform that underlie a school's pathway towards implementing the Common Core. Lucy and Mary have been helping hundreds of districts move towards the new horizon of the CCSS, and they will share with you lessons learned from this process.

Lucy is the author of the popular firsthand classroom materials Units of Study for Primary Writing and Units of Study for Teaching Writing, Grades 3-5, as well as several companion resources for literacy coaches and principals. Most recently, Lucy has published a curriculum for the reading workshop, Units of Study for Teaching Reading, Grades 3-5, and she has just released the new Common Core Reading & Writing Workshop series of curricular plans for grades K-8, which informs the content of this new workshop.

Mary Ehrenworth serves as Deputy Director of Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, where she oversees the Project's work with secondary school teachers, coaches, and principals, and is part of the leadership team. She is author of Looking to Write: Children Writing Through the Visual Arts and coauthor of The Power of Grammar: Unconventional Approaches to the Conventions of Language as well as several other works, including Units of Study for Teaching Reading, Grades 3-5. Mary also is a frequent keynote speaker both locally and at national conferences.

The cost of this workshop is $219.00 per person. If you register 3 or more participants at the same time the cost is $209.00 per person.
