I read a lot of radar detector reviews before I purchased this RX65, but I consider this a large purchase since I am not a major speeder. But tickets hurt your driving record and insurance and I spend so much time on the road I felt it was worth it.
The only negative thing I heard about this unit was false alarms on the laser band when driving into the sun. But I figured this would not be too big of an issue for me so I took the chance on it. I haven't experienced this though so that user may have experienced something unusual.
I would have liked the blue display as well but did not feel that it was that important to pay the extra for the blue LEDs. Overall though I would and have recommended this unit to a friend since it does a great job for me on radar and laser based guns.
I received this radar detector as a gift from my spouse and I must say I am impressed. I did have a Cobra that I was using but I was really concerned with the accuracy of that one. Now with this Beltronics radar detector I am getting warned a whole lot earlier and there are less false alarms. This makes using this unit so much easier since if it signals a radar check ahead I can bet that it is there.
The earlier warning gives me the time I need to get my speed back down to what it should be. Plus they have made it real simple to use complete with different alert tones for the different radar types used.
The only complaint I would voice is that I wish I had received the blue version of the RX65 instead of the red, but I guess that is being picky.
This is one of the best radar detectors I have ever owned. The accuracy is absolutely outstanding and the fact that I can program in false alarms on my regular route so that they will not be reported to me again makes this one of the smartest detectors that I have ever owned.
The mute button on the power cord is also a good addition. I no longer have to reach up to the dash to hit the mute button when the unit is letting me know that there is a radar in the area. The police notice this move and the whole point of using a detector is to remain out of their sights.
Whether you are a professional driver or just someone who loves to drive their car this radar detector is a great value and one of the top dash mount units available.
This product, according to RadarRoy website is the best radar detector you can buy. The Valentine V1 is awesome (especially the arrows), but it gives too many false alarms, and the Escort x50 is great, but this edges it out with ease of use..other sites will tell you the same. I've already CLEARY have been saved from one ticket and so with the price of the ticket and traffic school, this thing is alredy paid for and to think it will keep paying for itself. It's so easy to use and works so well. JUST LAST NIGHT I was with my friends Sam and Chris and I got a Ka warning and told them this means police (here in Southern California) and the warning got stronger and stronger and sure enough on the side of the road, at night when it's hard to see them, was a highyway patrol officer. He'd already pulled someone over, but that could have been us without the Bel. But, with this no way, the range is awesome and if there gun is on, you will pick them up WAY before they see you.. Really, this is simply a new addition to my must have list of things in life and I would recommend it to anyone else who drives with spirit.
With other detectors, I eventually turned a deaf ear to the many false alarms. While you still get them, they "make sense" and you quickly develop an instinct for true versus false alarms. X and K alerts abound near shopping centres, downtown and built up commercial areas presumably due to automatic doors, and perhaps other sources radio communications interference. Unless you're right near one of those buildings, however, the false signals tend to be weaker than real ones, and they don't persist for more than a block or so. Some false alarms occur with Laser, usually when driving into the sun that is fairly low in the sky. I'm not convinced that I've had even one false alarm on the Ka band, and Ka photo radar is the pervasive and, I would say, predatory threat in Calgary, AB. While it is deployed in a forward facing direction to get you from behind as you pass by, the Bel picks them up in plenty of time to make sure you aren't speeding, and to make adjustments without panicking. Contrary to what you read, I've encountered no interference from residential garage door openers. Also, I have not had any false alerts since turning on the POP radar alert.
"Dark" mode is nice at night, when the l.e.d. display might otherwise attract the attention of a police officer approaching from behind. While it's legal to use these devices, I expect no discretionary slack from an officer who sees me doing so.
The verbal threat alert is a nice feature, as is the self-diminishing volume with signals that continue for more than a second or two. This prevents warnings from interfering too much in your conversation or radio program.
My partner got 3 photo radar tickets in the 6 weeks before Christmas -- it seems such an unromantic gift, but I couldn't afford not to get her one.
I must say that I have never owned a radar detector before this one, though I did use my friend's cobra on a long trip once.
The first real opportunity I had to test out the Beltronics' effectiveness was on a 7 hour drive from the Jersey Shore to Sugarbush in Vermont. It alerted me several times of a police officer and provided sufficient warning for me to slow down in time.
There were not nearly as much 'false warnings' as my friend's produced. The only warnings which seemed to pose any real threat were the Ka though, but I think that is simply a function of radar detectors in general. Literally every time I heard the Ka alarm go off there was a police officer in a speed trap ahead, not one false Ka alarm was encountered on the entire trip.
If you are considering whether to drop the extra cash on this model in particular I would definitely recommend you do so. As I mentioned before, I had used my friend's Cobra (which was much cheaper) and while it still provided ample warning (I think) there were MANY false alarms. Besides, it is easy to justify the purchase after it gets you out of several speeding tickets on one trip.
