Visual field testing
Our office uses a Humphrey visual field analyzer in order to detect vision loss in any part of the visual field. This is important when evaluating patients diagnosed with glaucoma, or suspected of having glaucoma. There are characteristic patterns of vision loss associated with damage to the optic nerve in glaucoma. Visual field testing allows us to detect these early vision changes, and also helps us to monitor progression of the disease.
Visual field testing is also helpful in detecting vision loss caused by neurologic disorders such as stroke, or certain brain tumours.
In our office, we use a pachymeter to measure corneal thickness using ultrasound waves. It is important to measure corneal thickness during glaucoma testing, as corneal thickness can influence our measurement of the pressure inside the eye. We often perform both pachymetry and visual field testing during glaucoma testing.
In addition, pachymetry can be useful when evaluating the cornea for thinning or swelling secondary to disease. Conditions that can cause changes in corneal thickness include hypoxia secondary to contact lens overwear, or keratoconus. It is also important to measure corneal thickness prior to refractive surgery (eg. LASIK).
