Beginning with an idea to create a social media platform for gift giving, we needed to come up with a strategy to support the business model. There was a limited budget with a need to distribute on multiple mobile platforms. There was a lot of buzz about HTML 5, but not many mobile shops had actually executed large applications on multiple platforms yet.
We decided to make the move and architect this solution as a web app using HTML5. There were limited native interactions so we felt this technology strategy was the best fit.
The one important native interaction we did build in was the ability to use the camera. Each mobile platform has custom code developed so shoppers can snap a photo and quickly upload their gift desires. The built in bar code scanner also comes in handy and you can just scan and save your gift selection.
In the end, we built a light version a Facebook for gift giving, in a ridiculously shortly time frame, across three mobile operating systems. And HTML 5, we are pleased to report, helped make it all happen.
