Non-participants are people not working and not actively seeking or available for work. There are approximately 34,000 people age 25 to 54 in our region who are not in the labour force. The people in this group come from a variety of educational backgrounds, though those with only a high school diploma or less comprise 55%.

This sector has led all industries in employment growth over the past two years in Ontario. The industry has grown by 11.4%, while overall employment has just recently returned to its previous mark. In Hamilton, this industry employs 4.5% of the workforce, while 7.5% of the provincial workforce is employed in this industry.
