The potato has a long and lustrous history; it originated in South America over 8000 years ago and was brought to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 16th century to be shared with the rest of the world. Today, the potato is the world’s 4th largest food crop and is cultivated throughout the world.
Although Canada is the world’s 12th largest potato producer, Greengrocer’s baking potatoes are actually imported from the volcanic terrains of the Western United States. The volcanic ash present in these regions is rich in minerals and produces the most delicious and nutritious potato. Although a number of Canadian farmers have tried to mimic the volcanic effect by using similar potato seed and red clay soil, the taste and mineral composition of potatoes grown in volcanic soil cannot be replicated.
We pride ourselves in providing Canadians with the potatoes most suitable for baking. Our potato variety is carefully selected based on starch content, moisture levels, and precise centre of gravity. We choose potatoes composed of mostly dry mass with low moisture levels to ensure you get a delicious baking potato every time!
