HOV lanes are gone, but High Occupancy Toll Lanes are to come. The 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are finished. Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area can now see an end to the temporary HOV lanes! HOV Lanes: All temporary HOV lanes created specifically for Pan Am and Parapan Am are now finished, and roads are back to normal. During the Pan Am Games, the lanes were restricted to vehicles with three people per vehicle. During the Parapan Am Games, you needed two people per vehicle to use the lanes. Some roads may still have the HOV markers painted on them. These will be removed within the following weeks. Yet, for the HOV lanes to be enforceable it requires BOTH the HOV markers to be painted on the road and signs stipulating when the lane starts and ends. High Occupancy Toll Lanes (HOT Lanes): While the temporary HOV lanes are currently gone, they might make a comeback as something far worse! High Occupancy Toll Lanes! That’s right, Premier Katheleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory are already in discussions to make this happen. The HOT system would allow motorists who don’t have enough passengers in their vehicles to pay a toll and use the faster lanes to get to their destination. Whether or not these new HOT lanes are a good idea are already up for debate. Progressive Conservative MPP Michael Harris thinks they are a bad idea and has this to say on the subject “Taxpayers of Ontario have already paid for these roads where HOT lane tolls will be levied. Now the Wynne Liberals want us to pay again for the privilege of driving on our own roads.” While Premier Kathleen Wynne’s mind is set on creating these HOT lanes, Mayor John Tory is still a little sceptical. He Stated that he wants to see traffic statistics after the Pan Am and ParaPan games are over before any final decisions are made.
