Labour Support Specialist (Labour Doula)
A Labour Doula is a woman experienced in childbirth who empowers, provides information, emotional support and physical comfort to a mother and her partner before, during and in the postpartum period of childbirth. A Doula does not replace a partner, mid-wife or doctor!! Rather she is valuable addition to the maternity team, ensuring the woman and her partner are empowered to make the choices they feel most comfortable with and have the opportunity to have the birth experience they desire. Whether the mother is hoping for a natural delivery, wishing to use pain medications, or electing for a cesarean section, her Doula is a constant source of comfort, support and information. For the partner, the Doula is a trained professional that can help him to participate to his comfort level and offer him a break when necessary during this difficult process.

A Postpartum Doula offers support to the new mother and family in the period after delivery. Her role is variable and is based upon the mothers needs at that time. She is there to support the new mom and help her adapt to her new role and feel empowered as a mother. Some areas a post partum doula may offer her support include: light housekeeping, feeding support and information (for breast or bottle feeding), cooking or teaching healthy cooking skills, watching older siblings, offering demonstrations on newborn baby care techniques such as bathing and diapering or simply offering the new mother a period of rest while a professional cares for her baby.
