Water is in an urban context a complex issue with many stakeholders. The concept of Integrated Water Resources Management is increasingly gaining foothold. It provides a measure to deal with the issues in a holistic manner as it brings the stakeholders together. The aim is to protect the environment and resources and at the same time foster growth and sustainable development to the benefit of society.

By addressing the entire hydrological cycle and focusing on the interconnected nature of this, sustainable water policy and management can be developed. The integration helps remove the barriers of top down and sector-to-sector management which has dominated in the past.

Today water management is more than just supplying water and collecting the wastewater. Interaction is the key to the future and to sustainable development.

Inadequate drainage systems can become adequate if surplus water is diverted. The water can be used in a recreational context for artificial lakes, reused or gradually become part of the groundwater again. This also helps reduce the loads on wastewater plants.
