Assessment « Ontario Bilkey ADHD Clinics

During the assessment process, Dr. Bilkey will screen not only for ADHD, but also for its many comorbidities. ADHD is a highly comorbid condition, meaning that those with ADHD may also be impaired by other conditions, including depression, anxiety and mood disorders, and substance abuse disorder. According to the 2006 National Comorbidity Survey, published in The American Journal of Psychiatry in April 2006, 38.3% of Adult ADHD patients also suffer from another mood disorder; 47.1% experience anxiety disorders; and over 15% are afflicted with substance abuse disorders. Social Anxiety Disorder is comorbid with ADHD in over 29% of cases and Bipolar Disorder is highly comorbid at 19.4%.

Dr. Bilkey will also elicit extensive medical history as part of the assessment protocol. During interviews with a collateral historian, pertinent family history will be collected. ADHD is a highly heritable condition and in approximately 80% of cases, another family member will have ADHD. Other causes of ADHD include maternal smoking and fetal distress.
