Jackie Mackay Library Collection

The Jackie Mackay Collection is a reference library, dedicated to the assemblage and administration of an eclectic collection of books and related educational materials about craft and design in order to serve and support Nova Scotia´s craft community.   The Jackie Mackay Library Collection helps promote the concepts of quality, creativity and inspiration, and is accessible to all Nova Scotians with an interest in craft and craft history.

The collection is the property of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council. The library’s resources are available to the public at the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, located at 1061 Marginal Road in Halifax.

The library was initiated to honour the memory of Jackie Mackay, a talented artist, and weaver with an insightful voice as an arts activist. Jackie Mackay was an accomplished artist recognized as an Honorary Member of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council.

The Jackie Mackay Library has been built and sustained by independent donors, through generous gifts of books and funds.

Retail Craft Markets

Two annual juried markets: one in July featuring over 50 artisans, and one in November featuring close to 100. The NSDCC will also, from time to time, put on craft markets in conjunction with special events.

The Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council newsletter, NSDCC News, offers something for everyone with member profiles, features on craft activities and events, professional development articles and an extensive notice board of information. It is published in February, April, June, August, October and December each year for mailing to our members.

Posted in between issues of NSDCC News, our Newsflash Online bulletins are informal updates just for members. Both editions keep members up to date with the latest developments within the NSDCC, its committees and the craft community at large.

Juried exhibitions highlight recent, innovative work of NSDCC members. The NSDCC holds exhibitions of members work, along with periodic larger exhibitions which travel provincially or nationally.

Standards Assessment

Jurying is required for participation in NSDCC markets or to obtain the distinction of NSDCC Master Artisan. Assessment is undertaken by the Standards Committee consisting of seven respected craftspeople representing a variety of media elected by the NSDCC membership annually. All members of the NSDCC, with the exception of Associates, may apply to have work assessed by the Committee. Juried Status or Master Artisan membership within the NSDCC also gives you access to NSDCC's product label program.

Standard Assessments Dates for 2011 are:

March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, September 9, October 14

In order to assure your space in a Standards Assessment session, you are encouraged to book with the NSDCC office in advance.

If you would like more information on NSDCC Standards Assessment, please contact the NSDCC office and we will send you a complete information package.

Resource and Referral

We receive bulletins, news releases, calls for entry, trade publications and newsletters from craft organizations across the country which are available for use by our members. We also refer countless callers and visitors to our member craftspeople with requests ranging from individual commissions, to government gift bank purchases, to corporate recognition trophies.

NSDCC also promotes our members and their work to the news media, and responds to media requests for information on Nova Scotia craft and craftspeople.

Advocacy and Representation

NSDCC represents the interests of Nova Scotia's craft community on a variety of boards and committees. NSDCC also lobbies on behalf of craftspeople regarding proposed legislative or regulatory changes which could have an impact on their creative and/or business lives.
