Urban is the new normal. People want to live & work close to the things that they crave.
Urban versus Suburban living - their stage of life often determines where Canadians home buyers want to live - RE/MAX nova
Canadian home buyers desire different things depending upon at what stage in their life they find themselves. It is not limited to the style of home or the finishes but the actual location as well.
Ultimately, Canadians are evenly divided on where they want to live with 33% preferring the urban lifestyle, 31% opting for the suburban neighborhoods, & 32% remaining in the rural or small towns of Canada.
Younger Canadians, the Millenials & Generation X ( Those born between 1965-1997 ), definitely love the urban areas with 38% & 36%, respectively, choosing to live in Urban centers.
Home buyers want to get the right fit for their lifestyle at this stage in their life. As the stages in their lives change, so do the areas in which the prefer to live.
What appeals urban living has is different for many people. The most important factors include the close proximity to amenities & entertainment, a shorter commute & therefore seen as a time saver, access to public transportation, & of course, walkability ( being able to walk to the aforementioned freeing from the reliance & cost of a car ).
Of course, there are also drawbacks for many, which is why these buyers prefer suburban or rural living: 58% find urban living too congested & desire more privacy; 52% believe buying an urban home is too expensive; 45% find city living too noisy & desire more privacy; 43% desire more outdoor space; while 41% prefer the larger homes often found in suburban & rural living.
