Although still relatively new to our EMC family, LifeFlight air medical transport has been operating in Nova Scotia for 13 years. The LifeFlight team consists of flight critical care paramedics and flight nurses, who undergo rigorous training in preparation for their missions. In addition, there are obstetric, neonatal and pediatric teams on call at the IWK hospital in Halifax. LifeFlight operations are based at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The helicopter is the primary method of transport for LifeFlight missions, with access to a fixed-wing aircraft when necessary. Since the program’s inception, LifeFlight has transported more than 6,400 patients. In January 2010, the EHS LifeFlight program successfully achieved accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS).
