Medical Emergency:

Whynacht Security & Survival has been providing Emergency Signaling and Response (EMSAR) service for medical and personal emergency signaling since 1985. From then to now, EMSAR has been instrumental in the saving of hundreds of clients from unnecessary suffering, injury, and death, and with that kind of a track record, we don’t see any point in stopping.EMSAR systems come in two “flavours”:

  • Standard: This is as close to a “package deal” as we’ve ever gotten, and it’s the most common version fielded by us because it so neatly meets most applications. A standard fee rate applies to standard EMSAR service that has not increased since 1985. In 2004 the rate actually dropped slightly.

  • Special Needs: This is the standard system with modifications to accommodate conditions that may be unique to a specific client that would make standard service either useless or insufficient for them. Examples would be “lack of movement” sensors for clients who may be suddenly rendered unconscious without warning, sensors to detect wheelchair upset, specialized emergency actuators for assistance dogs, and remote door control, to name a few. Clients requiring extended range or coverage at two separate civic addresses also fall under special needs. The standard fee rate applies to this EMSAR category with additions that have to be quoted on a case by case basis.

The majority user group of standard EMSAR service is senior citizens and people with potentially incapacitating medical conditions who either live alone or must be alone for a portion of the day or night. The standard system consists of a receiver console that is connected to the household power and phone line, as well as a small, lightweight, and completely waterproof panic transmitter that is perfectly safe to wear in the shower. The transmitter, as supplied, comes capable of being carried by means of a black, quickly adjustable neck cord, a Velcro wrist strap, or a pocket clip. We draw from our years of experience to guide the client as to which of the three options might work best for them to avoid accidental activations. As to available transmitter colours, right now you can have the transmitter in any colour you want as long as it’s grey.

When a prospective client calls us to inquire about EMSAR, an initial consultation is usually done right over the phone. The prospective client’s reasons for interest in EMSAR service are discussed, the equipment is explained, as well as what we do when an alarm is received at our monitoring center. The fee structure is described.

If a decision is made to have EMSAR installed, an appointment is made. Installation takes approximately one hour including completion of our standard “EMSAR Client Information Sheet” which forms the basis of the client’s emergency response file. This is a three page form and includes such information as:

  • Full name;

  • Civic address;

  • Special directions (if any);

  • Telephone number;

  • Date of birth;

  • Family doctor;

  • Allergies (if any);

  • Basic medical history as it relates to the client’s reasons for obtaining EMSAR (sometimes this has nothing to do with medical history and is simply because the client lives alone and wants another layer of protection that is more convenient than toting a cordless phone around the house);

  • Any physical characteristics or prosthetics that should be made known to paramedics to ensure safe handling of the client if treatment must be administered while they are unable to communicate;

  • Medications currently being taken broken down by drug name, dose, and frequency; and

  • Persons (family, friends, neighbours) to be called in the event of an emergency.

This information is collected for the sole purpose of rendering the fastest, most accurate emergency service to the client under worst case conditions. It is held in the strictest confidence and always collected and entered into our system only by an administration level Whynacht Security & Survival officer with the necessary training and experience. This information is updated every year during the annual system test and inspection, and the client is asked to update us sooner if major changes in their medications or health picture occur through the year.

Beyond this, using EMSAR is as simple as keeping your button where you can reach it, and pushing the button if you need to. That’s all there is to it.For more information, see our page.
