ANSWERED: YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPY
For many of us, a bad fall, sports injury, or surgery means a trip to the physiotherapist. If you’ve never been before, you may feel overwhelmed. But don’t worry-- our dedicated, knowledgeable staff will help you along each way to make sure that you’re comfortable. But if you’re wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into-- or you’re just interested in the profession-- here are a few frequently asked questions that can set your mind at ease:
So, what exactly is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is the use of hands-on techniques to help manage dysfunction and pain disorders. Our goal is to restore your physical function and joint and muscle motion and we do this by assessing your injuries and creating a comprehensive plan to help you reach your health, fitness, and mobility goals.
What’s the difference between a physiotherapist and a physical therapist?
There isn’t any! It’s just a difference of terms. They both do the same thing, and the terms can be used interchangeably.
What are some questions I should ask my physiotherapist at a session?
You should be comfortable enough with your physiotherapist to be able to ask any questions or bring up your concerns. Your questions will vary depending on your injury and treatment, but here are a few general questions that physiotherapists often answer:
How long should I expect my session(s) to last?
Could you explain how I injured myself and how I can prevent the same kind of injury in the future?
What physical activities can I participate in now without compromising my recovery?
When can I expect to feel relief from my pain? (And what should I do if it does not get better?)
Is there anything else I can do to help ensure the success of my recovery?
What should I wear to a physiotherapy session?
Depending on the session and your treatment plan, your physiotherapist can give you more specific directions and suggestions. However, you should dress comfortably so that you are able to move easily.
What problems can physiotherapy help relieve?
We can help you treat injuries like sprains and strains, swollen, tender, and/or painful muscles and joints, and fractures. We can also help you with rehabilitation after an accident, surgery, or stroke. If you’re not sure if your injury or pain can be remedied with physiotherapy, just ask!
Medical appointments make me nervous. What should I expect during my first visit with the physiotherapist?
Your comfort and health is at the forefront of our practice. At your first visit we will ask you questions about your health history and your condition. We will also assess your injury so that we can better create a treatment plan. At this time, we may also be able to present that treatment plan with you and explain what lies ahead for you.
At Avalon Laser Health, we want to make sure that you’re living your best life. This belief permeates all of our treatment options. If you’re ready to make a change in your health and to feel better, schedule a consultation with us today!
