Political Healthcare « Nurse CE,Continuing Medical Education, LPN Courses,Online Nursing School

Healthcare reform is an especially complex issue, involving many moral, spiritual, and political views. Judeo Christian social teaching includes justice, subsidiarity, and the common good. The healthcare reform debate questions the fairness of forcing those more fortunate to provide healthcare to the less fortunate.
Judeo Christian social teaching would indicate healthcare decisions be made not only on the basis of what is good for us personally, but what is good for us as a community. Christian views may see sickness as a punishment or as a window on immortality, reminding us not to prize life above all other values. (When AIDS was first emerging many felt it was God’s wrath on the gay community, for example. We all needed to be reminded AIDS is a disease, not a punishment). Health care service can be an expression of our love for God. Healthcare reform should be politically realistic, relatively simple. and inclusive. Healthcare is a good like no other and can be a powerful expression of God’s compassion, healing, and justice.
Certainly spiritual beliefs have played a big role in reform as issues such as reproductive rights and stem cell research have caused great debate. Nurses do not have to assist in abortions and pharmacists can refuse to dispense the morning after pill, for example. Illegal aliens have caused much debate regarding healthcare as a right or a privilege. We can not seem to find the common ground to identify WHO will be afforded this right or what BASIC healthcare will be.

I would like to compare the infection rates in a unit who implements a strict patient hand hygiene program with a unit who observes the standard practice. Basically staff on the selected unit would offer hand sanitizer to the patient after toileting if the patient is not able to wash their hands. This may appeal to hospital administration as this simple intervention may prove to save the hospital significant sums spent on HAIs annually.

Nursing as Profession « Nurse CE,Continuing Medical Education, LPN Courses,Online Nursing School

Nurses are often the only 24 hour care providers in many smaller hospitals and remain the number one most trusted profession every year except 2001 when fire fighters had the honor. The other disciplines listed often are not even asked to evaluate the patient until the nurse evaluates the patient, determines a need, and asks for the consultation.
