The scope of substation work in Atlantic Canada completed by EUS since 2007 includes greenfield construction on wind farms and other sites, and maintenance and upgrades to existing substations. EUS offers Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services for construction of new substations, build-to-print construction services and supply of skilled resources and equipment necessary to complete them.

Substation and Control Building Construction Project History

Glen Dhu Wind Farm
Dates: Access to site (September 2009). Substantial completion (November 2009)

EUS completed EPC for the interconnection substation between Glen Dhu Wind Energy 34.5 kV wind farm collector system and a 138kV Nova Scotia Power transmission line. Construction activities included Civil, Grounding, Control Cabling, Control Building, 34.5kV Electrical Equipment, 138kV electrical equipment and the main power transformer. EUS was also responsible for development and execution of the substation testing and commissioning program.

Digby Wind Farm
Dates: Access to site (August 2010). Substantial completion (December 2010)

EUS completed EPC for the interconnection substation between Nova Scotia Power’s 34.5 kV wind farm collector system and a 69kV Nova Scotia Power transmission line. Construction activities included Civil, Grounding, Control Cabling, Control Building, 34.5kV Electrical Equipment, 69kV Electrical Equipment and the Main Power Transformer. EUS was also responsible for development and execution of the substation testing and commissioning program.

Dalhousie Mountain Wind Farm
Dates: Access to site (July 2009). Substantial completion (December 2009).

EUS completed EPC for the interconnection substation between RMS Energy 34.5 kV wind farm collector system and a 230kV Nova Scotia Power transmission line. Construction activities included Civil, Grounding, Control Cabling, Control Building, 34.5kV Electrical Equipment and 230kV Electrical Equipment. EUS was also responsible for development and execution of the substation testing and commissioning program.

Caribou Mountain Wind Farm
Dates: Access to site (April 2009). Substantial completion (August 2009).

EUS completed EPC for the interconnection substation between GDF Suez 34.5 kV wind farm collector system and a 138kV New Brunswick Power transmission line. Construction activities included Civil, Grounding, Control Cabling, Control Building, 34.5kV Electrical Equipment and 138kV Electrical Equipment. EUS was also responsible for development and execution of the substation testing and commissioning program.

Lingan Wind Farm
Dates: Access to site (April 2006). Substantial completion (June 2006).

EUS completed Construction for the interconnection substation between Cape Breton Power Ltd. 25kV wind farm collector system and a 69kV Nova Scotia Power transmission line. Construction activities included Civil, Grounding, Control Cabling, Control Building, 25kV Electrical Equipment and 69kV Electrical Equipment.

Nova Scotia Power Inc.
Dates: Contract start date 1992, and remains ongoing.

EUS has completed new construction, maintenance, upgrades and expansions for substations throughout Nova Scotia and of all different sizes and voltages.

New Brunswick Power
Dates: Contract start date 2001, and remains ongoing.

EUS has completed new construction, maintenance, upgrades and expansions for substations throughout New Brunswick and of all different sizes and voltages.

Emera Utility Services - Wind Farm Engineering, Procurement Construction and Maintenance

EUS was awarded the contract from RESL to build 5.5 km of 5kV overhead collector system, 0.6 km of 25kV underground collector system and high voltage terminations for 11 Wind Turbine Generators. EUS also constructed the 7.8km fiber optic communication system, including terminations in the turbines and at the substation. We have also been involved in the construction of most of the interconnection transmission lines for those projects.

Emera Utility Services - Transmission Construction & Maintenance

In its present form and through its predecessor company, F.A Tucker - Emera Utility Services has been performing power transmission maintenance and construction work in Atlantic Canada since 1966. EUS constructed a 70km 138kV transmission line on wood structures from GDF Suez’s 100MW West Cape Wind Farm in Prince Edward Island to the Summerside substation.

Emera Utility Services is the only contractor in the Maritimes qualified and experienced in performing live line transmission and distribution work; and we maintain one of the most knowledgeable and experienced power line construction and maintenance workforces in the region. Nova Scotia Power EUS was awarded the transmission and distribution construction and maintenance contracts for the Province of Nova Scotia.

The ability of EUS to ramp up emergency crews quickly has been of benefit to several utilities in the Northeast, including Nova Scotia Power, Central Maine Power, Maritime Electric, and National Grid. Our primary markets are Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and the Northeastern United States. EUS provides emergency response and restoration services to organizations that require additional operating resources.
