Granite has become the countertop of choice for new and renovated homes due to its look, maintenance and durability. It can withstand heat, most scratches, and virtually stain resistent (as long as proper maintenace is conducted). Traditionally price was the only barrier for homeowners to installing granite. In the past few years, Prefab (pre-fabricated edges) granite has lowered the barrier to entry and made it possible to upgrade by upto half the price of traditional granite. But is prefab right for you?

What is the difference?

Custom Granite has generally referred to a granite job done with “raw slabs.” Raw slabs are imported into the country cut in typically 5’ x 9’ slabs (can vary by 2’), polished, but without finished edging. This requires 100% of the edging and all of the “size to fit” fabrication to be done by a local fabricator.

Pre-fabricated granite simply means that the time-consuming and costly skilled fabrication is done at the factory overseas. The raw slabs are cut into the standard countertop, island, and peninsula sizes, the polishing is performed and edging is fabricated. This is done by large cutting, polishing, and edging machinery that takes advantage of the latest technology, automation, and inexpensive labor. Only a small amount of edging and “size to fit” fabrication is necessary which allows for an approximate 30-50% savings vs. custom.
