What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch therapy that accesses the deep levels of our physiological beings. It was first discovered by Dr. William Sutherland who specialized in the articulations of the cranial and facial bones. Dr. Sutherland discovered that the cranial sutures allowed for small degrees of movement. This movement lead to the discovery of the craniosacral system. Dr. John Upledger, founder of Craniosacral Therapy, conducted studies that explained the function of the craniosacral system and its use in evaluation and treatment of poorly understood malfunctions of the brain and spinal cord. The discovery of the craniosacral system uncovered the network of interrelated tissues of nerves, muscles, fascia, fluids and bone. Within this vast network a very subltle pulse or rhythm can be palpated with light touch, known as the Craniosacral rhythm.
The subtle rhythms of the craniosacral system are driven by the absorption and reproduction of the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. This subtle rhythm can be felt anywhere in the body. By working with the craniosacral system, the practitioner listens to the body using light touch to identify where the body holds disease and dysfunction. These areas can be palpated as restrictions or stagnation in the craniosacral rhythm and are often the underlying and governing patterns of disease and dysfunction of both the mind and body. The light touch of craniosacral therapy gently encourages the body to release those restrictions or move energy through the areas of stagnation, thus enhancing the body's own self treating and self regulatory processes. This allows the body to follow natural priorities for healing directed by the patient's own physiology.
