The Misonix BoneScalpel is a novel ultrasonic bone cutting tool for rapid, safe and precise osteotomies. It is designed to provide clean cuts through osseous structures with minimal loss of viable bone while sparing adjacent soft tissues.

In combining advantages of both, powered rotary devices and traditional hand instruments, the BoneScalpel offers a new level of precision and safety for cutting bone. It becomes possible to alter operating techniques that were previously limited by safety concerns attributed to rotary sharps. By changing from hand instruments to the ultrasonic BoneScalpel it is possible to reduce bone resection times by 30-60min in laminectomies.

The BoneScalpel engages the bone through sequential impacts from longitudinal oscillations with a frequency of 22.5 kHz. Osseous structures yield to the recurring impacts resulting in a high-precision compression cut. In addition, a patented jet nozzle directs irrigation fluid over the blade to prevent bone necrosis. Soft tissue, in contrast, is preserved due to its elasticand flexible structure, which absorbs the impact energy like a spring. The linear motion of a blunt tip avoids accidental trapping of soft tissue matter while eliminating the spinning and tearing associated with rotary power instruments. This way, it is possible to cut safely in close proximity to delicate soft structures.

The ultrasonic action of the Misonix BoneScalpel allows for effortless cutting of bone. Its oscillating motion enables the use of blades with only 0.5mm thickness and results in high-precision, linear or curved incisions with minimal loss of bone.
