Well, what we do here at the stick doctor, is pretty much anything you want done to the head of your axe. Everything from stringing heads, to dying em’, tips on maintainance, and upkeep, etc.
I have been tinkering with these molded heads since the early 80′s, as much as that dates me, it’s true. Easily since I was 10 years old, pretty much since I picked up my first plastic head. I knew i had to have my stick juuuuuuust right, that being said, I wasn’t leaving it with just anybody, so I figured, who better than me? So I tore my stick down, and restrung it, until I got it semi close, then did it again, and again, and again, and again, and again. Trust me on this , you don’t learn how to trust your string jobs for while, the first few heads are not so good, but after lots of reps/time, it comes. There are many techniques to hangin’ a bag, but what it essentially comes down to is, that if the pocket is actually true. I like to string a very generic pocket that anyone can actually play. Not too deep, but not too shallow as well. It’s essential that a beginner start with a head that is actually strung properly, or reasonably close. Reason being is that bad habits start with bad sticks, if your head is untrue, you definately will alter your release. A generic pocket allows the beginner or reasonably inexperienced player to feel the game, the way you actually should. And ofcourse there are the custom jobs, I certainly encourage specifics. If you are looking for something a little different and you want your pocket a certain way, just let me know. I want the stick the way you like it, not the way I play mine. If you want one like mine, you gotta tell me. My favorite part is the install, Just when you have it hooked, and i begin to form it, thats when satisfaction really comes because I’m halfway there and I got a feel for the outcome.
Customising heads is one of my favorite aspects of the gig as well, lets face it, it’s ALL a blast… I stock pretty much only hard mesh, strictly because of the climate here. Hard mesh tends to perform better in the rain , and recover better after being soaked. I have dye, and sidewall string up the ying yang, pretty much every color you can get, not to mention the 17 colors of sidewall string. (sorry st. margret’s, no teal yet, but i’m workin’ on it)… I hang a fundamental pocket that ANYONE can play, minor repairs, like blown sidewalls or top strings, torn shooters, etc, is the easiest fix. Depending on how extensive a job it will be, a quick evaluation of the head will determine the potential damage… If you have a mesh kit, i’ll gladly throw it in, If I have to provide the mesh and you have strings and shooters, then thats a little different…If I have to provide the entire mesh kit,(mesh, sidewalls, top strings and shooting strings) then that consists of an entire mesh “kit”. However, if you are looking for a tied and dyed job, that is the most extensive thing we do, that just might consist of an overnight stay. And, as a favour I will provide a lender stick while your head is spending the night, or two, with me, so you don’t have to go without while you wait. And I’m pretty sure other sites don’t offer that feature.
