As I watched the news one week, I heard about the man who had been indicted of the murder of two abortionists. I thought of what he had done and how to me, it seemed so hypocritical. I thought immediately of James 1:8 that says: "A double minded man is unstable in all of his ways." I know that the context of the passage is not really speaking about a situation like this, but I also thought of how closely the principle relates to it.
I was wondering how a man can stand up and speak for the life of an unborn baby, who happens to be a human being, and then take the life of two adults in such a vicious manner, who also happen to be human beings. It really seemed to me to be hypocritical, or double minded. How can someone say they stand for the right to life for all, and then take the life of another?
I think the answer probably lies in the fact that whether we are pro life, or pro death. We already have judges in the physical realm who judge people who commit criminal acts, so we really do not need any self appointed ones. I think it is a shame that abortion is not a criminal act, but my faith in God does not place me above the law. My action against it should come through prayer, parliamentary changes to the law, and even peaceful demonstrations if I should feel led in that direction. No where in the Word of God does it give me the right to take another man's life when mine is not in danger.
Even Jesus when He was in the garden and they came for Him, rebuked Peter when he drew his sword and cut off the soldiers ear. If ever there was an injustice, it was when Jesus was arrested and crucified, and He made it clear to Peter, what he did was wrong. Jesus prayed for the soldier, and his ear was healed.
What we need to realize is that there are other forces at work in the world around us, and like Paul said, our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers in the heavenly places.
When we take the actions that man did on the news, we really are acting under the same kind of a spirit, and that is not the Holy Spirit of God. When someone wrongs us, and we try to get back at them, we are really coming down to their level to get back at them. God said that His ways are higher than our ways, and Jesus exhibited some of them. He said that He only did what His Father said. That should be our goal. Let's let Him be the Judge, and only do what He says. The way to be sure we heard His voice, is to check it out with His Word, and the example of His Son, Jesus Christ.
