If it wasn’t for the generous hearts of others who have a little extra to spare and share, great things would rarely come to pass. As with any community driven and public use project, volunteers and private donors make up the heart and soul of success.
A state-of-the-art Skatepark has been a dream among a select group in the dainty, heritage City of Lacombe for over a decade. Over those years, a handful of people remained connected to the vision, only to encounter barricades and challenges too difficult to overcome. Price. Leadership. Land.
But in 2009, a group of community advocates comprised of parents, business owners and a city councillor decided it was time to finally see the vision through to reality. They formed the Lacombe Skatepark Committee, a now registered society, and gathered a dedicated group of nine teenage skateboarders ages 10 – 21 to see the dream through.
Most impressive to the Lacombe Skatepark Committee is the effort of our nine youth volunteers who’ve picked garbage in the ditch, collected hundreds and hundreds of cans and bottles, and dug gravel out of the horseshoe pits for seniors in our community. They’ve even sold ice water by the bottle during the Lacombe Days parade, doing double duty, community awareness and fundraising. They’ve been a pleasure to work with.
Their efforts have raised over $12,000 towards the construction of the Skatepark, but we’re still short.
And so the plea goes out to corporate entities and private citizens. The plan is to break ground in May of 2011, only four short months from now, but in order for that to happen, we need some serious support.
Sponsorship opportunities exist and we’re here to help you contribute.
