  • It can detect the presence of “bad” insulation in series with good insulation which direct current test methods miss.  Many forms of dielectric degradation exhibit a good and bad layered insulation phenomenon which the power factor test can identify prior to failure.
  • It provides a measure of insulation integrity in terms of ratio and is therefore independent of the amount of insulation tested.  Tracking this ratio as a function of time over the life of any insulator makes it much more likely to identify the failure potential of electrical apparatus.  This ability to more accurately predict failure can prevent costly downtime and damage to associated equipment.
