How does it work?
The media works with a catalytic surface. Once water contact occurs the nanocrystalls on the ceramic surface of the media create calcium crystals from the positive calcium ions. These calcium crystals are neutral and can not attach to any surfaces.
This applies to pipes as well as machinery surfaces. This works with cold water as well as with hot water. The nano sized crystals are rinsed away by the water flow. All harmful characteristics of the calcium are neutralized.
The important health advantages of the calcium and magnesium remain intact because the crystals dissolve at a pH of 3 and are then available to the body.
Removal of existing calcium deposits.
The calcium crystals which are rinsed away by the water can not attach to any surfaces. But due to the nano structure of the crystals they have a similar function to the SOFT NOR Media. It binds additional calcium to itself and therefore breaks the grid structure of the calcium deposits. The result is that even after a short time large pieces of deposits are removed. This process
continues until the surface is free from deposits.
Formation of a corrosion preventing layer After the old calcium deposits are removed a 30 to 80 micron thick corrosion preventing layer is formed. This layer forms because of the reaction of the nano surface of the crystals and the metallic surface of the pipes. This is comparable to the green layer of verdigris on a copper roof. As soon as the protective layer is formed it can no longer grow bigger, but it creates complete protection.
How does the Scale Reduction System function?
NSPI media produces a catalytic reaction with molecular patterns on its perfectly round high capacity surface which converts the temporary hardness of calcium and magnesium carbonate content of the water to allow calcite crystals to grow. When the crystals reach a Nano size in the range of Nano-meters they detach and are carried away by the water flow. These calcite partials are heat resistant and can no longer cause hardness deposits the treated water coming out of the unit will also remove existing scale. Depending on the thickness of the existing scale it will take some weeks to remove it 100 %. But after this the pipe system and the heat exchanger surfaces will be absolutely clean.
What is the main difference to softening with ion exchange unit?
Ion exchange resins remove Ca and Mg ions from water and attach to the surface of the resin and replace these with sodium ions. ”salt”. Softening units require water for backwashing and common Brine water “salt water” for regeneration (as an example: in order to regenerate 26 gallons of softening resin, up to 55 pounds of salt per regeneration cycle is required). The increased sodium content of the water is a concern to more and more government regulators. There are also perceived health concerns. This is a negative aspect for the consumer and the consumer perceives health risks for their cardiovascular system.
When there is a septic tank the warranties are often voided when sodium/chloride is discharged into the septic system. Water for backwashing and the salt ($200 to $400 per year to purchase salt) are expensive. Control heads, as required for ion exchange units, must be maintained which is an additional ongoing maintenance cost.
Within the Scale Prevention Unit (the NSPI Catalyst being at its core) the water hardness is transformed into firm lime crystals and not removed. The crystals are brought out of solution. The crystal can not attach to pipes or appliances. There is no need for regeneration of the bed because the NSPI system works like a catalyst (the media is not used up in the process).
This unit does not use salt and therefore does not add sodium/chloride to the water. It requires no control heads (a simple in-out valve is all that is required), no water for backwashing and no salt for regeneration. This means you have no cost for service, no cost for water, no cost for regeneration material.
What should I expect after installing a Calcium Reduction System from my dishwasher?
Dishwashers use water from the hot water side of plumbing and the water is extremely hot water and also extremely hot in the drying cycles when cleaning and drying the dishes. You may find unusual initial spotting because of the de-scaling taking place. You also may have existing excessive scale build up in the inside of the dishwasher.
The best way to eliminate the excising scale in the dishwasher is to put a cup of white vinegar in the upper basket during the washing cycle. You can also use citric acid instead of the white vinegar. This will help dissolve the existing scale in the washer arms and inside surface of the dishwasher. You may need to do this until all of the scale in the plumbing is dissolved.
When you have water going through the conditioner other than being used in the dishwasher cleaning cycle you can have the calcium crystals break down back into solution if you are using harsh dishwashing detergents that have low ph, high chlorine, and phosphates.
Harsh detergents can breakdown the crystals and than can cause spotting on the dishes. It will be important to reduce your soap usage as much as 50%. Can I replace a traditional water softener system with this system and what difference in performance should I see between the two systems?
Yes, you can remove a traditional softener and replace with this system. There will be a difference with the new system in that the customer will not feel the slippery feeling that he had with the traditional softener. This is because the hardness was not removed but was crystallized. The customer will have all the other great advantages like up to 30% less detergent usage and cleaner laundry. The additional advantage is that he will not have sodium in his service water.
IMPORTANT! You may experience a salty taste or slight odor in the water for a short period of time AFTER THE REMOVEAL OF THE OLD SOFTENER. This happens because the new Calcium Reduction System will clean the pipes that may have a sodium and/or calcium build up and residue in the pipes in the house from the old softener. However, this lasts only for a short time until the pipes are clean. You can be assured that you will never again have a sodium or calcium build up in the pipes, water heater, and appliances.
Will I experience any spotting after installing this system?
Depending on the amount and type of scale deposits present in the plumbing of your home you may see the following for approximately one to six weeks after the installation of the NSPI system.
These effects will be temporary and will steadily stop once the appliances and plumbing have been de-scaled. The water going through the your new system can initially increase the hardness in the water due to de-scaling of the plumbing system. You can especially see this on the hard hot water side of the plumbing and the hot water heater because scale builds up faster in hot water.
You may see calcium particles in the aerators, shower heads, bath tub, dishwasher and other areas with high flow rates. The high flow rates can accelerate the de-scaling effect) these conditions are temporary and only last during the de-scaling period. The hot water heater can also have excessive scale build up and may need to be cleaned out by opening the bottom drain valve on the hot water heater (Be sure to turn off the electrical or heat source) Flush out the loosened scale by attaching a hose to the drain valve. You may need to do this for several weeks until the plumbing and hot water heater has been de-scaled.
The good news is that a clean hot water heater uses much less electricity or gas to keep the water hot. You can also speed up the de-scaling process by turning on all the hot water valves in the house once or twice a week until all the plumbing is de-scaled and the water runs clear.
