Ecole Football Pour L’Avancement Des Jeunes De Liancourt

This soccer club was formed by a group of four young former soccer players, one of whom was killed during the earthquake. Their aim is to provide a safe place for young boys and girls in the community to play soccer, learn team skills and have fun. This club organizes tournaments during the summer months and due to the overwhelming response had to turn away many interested children last year. We witnessed players taking off their shoes and socks to pass on to incoming players who had no gear. They are looking for donations including:

  • Balls
  • Soccer shoes
  • Bibs/pinnies
  • Cones
  • Shin guards
  • Socks
  • Goalkeeper gloves
  • Nets
  • Whistles
  • Jersey’s

The residents rely on agriculture for their livelihood, but that industry is suffering bitterly due to lack of adequate water supply for the plants as well as influx of United States subsidized goods. The Danoit Haitian Relief Society has started a small community garden and has also dug a 50 ft well and a 10 × 10 water reservoir so that water will be available for the crops.

On Jan. 12 a magnitude 7 earthquake centred just 25 kilometres west of the capital Port au Prince killed about 230,000 people, injured another 300,000 and left a million homeless. On June 12 the Oceanside community came together in support of the Danoit fundraiser for Haiti at the Parksville Elementary School gym. Baz, an educational assistant at Kwalikum Secondary School, grew up in Port au Prince and lost several relatives in the disaster.

Upon arriving at the school we were informed by the principal of the psychological problems that the students are experiencing as a result of the earthquake as well as the inability of parents to pay tuition and buy school supplies for their children. The Danoit Haitian Relief Society has sponsored 5 students from L’ecole Sainte Goutti and 7 from other schools in Haiti for the school year 2010-2011.
