Develop the foundation skills required to effectively coach others

Did you know that many people fail their first coaching examination? Why? In many cases, although students understand the theory behind the coaching process, they have not always acquired certain foundation skills recognized by the International Coach Federation (ICF). Students may understand theory but aren’t able to adequately demonstrate the competencies.

At CDI we expect a lot from our coaches! After 15 years in the industry, we have observed that the coaches who run successful coaching practices possess skills in three different areas:

    Whether you are a student or a seasoned veteran, when you work with CDI we customize coaching to suit your individual needs in one or a combination of these areas.

    Focus:

    Understand and practice International Coach Federation (ICF) Coaching Core Competencies and Standards and Ethics*

    (* Mandatory for anyone applying for ICF professional coaching certification) Format:

    One-on-one mentoring or

    (see “Group coaching option” below).

    Purpose:

    Equip you with a proficient understanding of ICF Coaching Core Competencies skills and the ability to demonstrate them.

    1. Understand and practice ICF Coaching Core Competencies and Standards and Ethics;
    2. A practical discussion on how to apply for your designation (if this is your goal);
    3. Professional mentor coaching with a PCC or an MCC coach;
    4. Supervised coaching sessions with specific verbal and written feedback;
    5. Develop a conscious and deliberate application of your skills;
    6. Access to materials and resources to use with your clients (how to deliver a complimentary coaching session, intake package, basic practice development, etc).

    In the business world the phrase: “It’s just business; it’s not personal” is widely repeated. However, if you think about it, you are your business: your clients decide to purchase your services. If you experience challenges in your personal life, chances are these challenges may show up in your coaching practice – unless you acquire the skills to manage them. At CDI, we firmly believe in equipping our clients with a solid foundation from which they can build a viable coaching practice.

    Focus:

    Increase your personal awareness and professional development as a coach and an entrepreneur.

    Format:

    One-on-one mentoring.

    Purpose:

    Equip you with the skills and the confidence to apply ICF Coaching Core Competencies to actual client work.

    1. Establish who you want to be as a coach.  Align your personal and professional life so you are congruent (“walk your talk”);
    2. Find your voice to increase your ability to coach clients in an authentic manner;
    3. Know yourself deeply. Engage in self-inquiry with a coach.  Explore your passion, your values, your strengths, what integrity means to you, etc. so you can leverage these as a coach and in your life;
    4. Explore activities you need to start and stop doing to achieve success;
    5. Learn to reframe challenges and problems into opportunities to live your best self.

    Focus:

    Focus on business development and creating a sustainable coaching practice

    Format:

    One-on-one mentoring or

    (see “Group coaching option” below).

    Purpose:

    Equip you with the knowledge and resources required to build a sustainable coaching practice. Commit to your business development and create possibility.  Express yourself as a coach, have a clear offer of service, and business strategy (which captures your passion and desire for growth) that will allow you to attract and partner with your clients purposefully.

    1. Develop a marketing plan and strategies for your coaching business;
    2. Discover your passion and niche market;
    3. Focus on what is important in your own development as a business owner;
    4. Access to a number of resources to work with your clients, coaching tools, assessments, and coaching articles
    5. Mentoring on practice management;
    6. Personalized coaching and feedback that meets your specific developmental needs and goals to grow your business;
    7. Coaching practice and specific feedback that is relevant to growing coaching competency and capabilities;

    (Mix of group coaching and one-one-one mentoring/supervision)

    Learning new skills in a group setting can be highly effective as well as cost effective. At CDI the group coaching option is limited to 3 coaches.  As part of the ICF accreditation process, coaches are required to be mentored for 10 hours by a Master Certified Coach (MCC) or Professional Certified Coach (PCC). (If you are applying for coaching certification via the portfolio route the ICF accreditation process includes an oral exam). Seven of those hours can consist of group coaching; and three hours of one-on-one mentoring.  This option includes 2 supervised coaching sessions with verbal and written feedback.
