Imagine your doctor being able to see inside your body, find your fibroid and treat it without incisions. This is the idea behind ExAblate 2000.
ExAblate uses a combination of high intensity ultrasound waves and magnetic resonance imaging that provides a novel treatment alternative for fibroids. The transducer focuses the ultrasound energy to target an area of the fibroid, causing tissue destruction and symptom relief.
During treatment, magnetic resonance images enable the physician to visualize the fibroid and surrounding organs in 3D, obtain real-time feedback about temperature changes in the treated area, and observe treatment results in a totally non-invasive manner.
What is MRgFUS?
MR guided Focused Ultrasound is a non-invasive outpatient procedure that uses high doses of focused ultrasound waves to destroy uterine fibroids without affecting any of the other tissues around the fibroid. The procedure is conducted in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, which helps the physician “see” inside the body to pinpoint, guide, and continuously monitor the treatment.
Imagine using a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s energy on a single point to create a flame to burn a leaf. The focused ultrasound energy is directed at a small volume of the fibroid, raising its temperature high enough to cause thermal ablation (killing of the cells) without impacting other tissues. Pulses of energy are repeated until the entire volume is treated.
