CALSTAR 7 opened for service on December 5, 2002. It is located at the Santa Maria Airport on California's beautiful Central Coast and serves Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, southern Monterey, and western Kern Counties.

We operate a Bell 222 helicopter which has a range of over 200 miles, a speed of over 140 knots, and IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) navigation which enables us to fly in varying coastal climate conditions. Inside there is a spacious cabin which enables us to carry two patients and field versions of the same medical equipment found in most emergency rooms.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is the only Level II Trauma Center in the area and is the destination hospital for many trauma patients. Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital are partners with CALSTAR in that they assist our flight nurses in clinical training for advance practice procedures for newborns, pediatrics, obstetrics, and adult critical and emergency care.

During the summer months the population in the coastal communities nearly doubles with tourists and visitors who are active in several recreational activities: hiking, horse back riding, cycling, ATV riding at the dunes, boating at the lakes, bird watching, etc. This added population sometimes poses a challenge in the medical community.

Our nonprofit service is committed to making a difference. In addition to life-saving medical transports we are seen at community events such as Health & Safety Fairs, Elks Rodeo, Wildflower Triathlon, bike racing, and the “Every 15 Minutes” program in local high schools.

CALSTAR is an excellent adjunct to this community, providing EMS air ambulance service along with the exceptional EMS ground transport services.

We are grateful for the support given by our community, especially the following organizations:

Woods-Claeyssens Foundation
Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indian Foundation
Santa Barbara Foundation
WalMart — Arroyo Grande
Sam's Club — Bakersfield
Central Coast Jet Center
