I was turning a color glove right side out, so I placed it to my mouth and blew in air to get the fingers to come out of the twisted glove. I went to the color bar, mixed color and came back to my chair to start the coloring process. I noticed my client had an odd look on her face, and she asked me what was all over my face. So I looked in the mirror and found a BIG red ring of color around my mouth. We both got a good laugh out of that!

A client swore up and down she wanted me to do “whatever” with her hair. With that in mind, I cut off four inches off at the nape. She freaked out and told me to, “Put it back on!” Needless to say, the teacher finished the cut.

Several years ago, I had a level 3 client come in wearing a beautiful, white, silk jacket she had just purchased and was in love with. I didn’t have her remove the jacket because I thought I caped her well enough. But after her blow out, I took the cape off and discovered the collar of her jacket was jet black! I now own a very expensive silk jacket with a black collar. Oops, lesson learned!

My manager asked our assistant to blow dry his client’s hair “free hand.” After a few moments, no one heard the blow dryer on, so we went to check on them. The assistant had her hand in the client’s hair and was just moving it around! My manager had to tell her what he meant…We all still laugh about it.

I’ll never forget this! My former boss had just finished a perfectly cut bob on a client. Thinking the client was right behind her, she walked to the front desk and turned around just in time to see the client rifling through her top drawer. She picked up a razor comb and ran it through the very top of her hair and ruined her part! Words cannot describe the look on their faces…

My worst nightmare as a hairstylist happened to me once! My co-worker was trying to get my hair to platinum blonde. After many tries, it was a golden pale blonde. Me being fresh out of beauty school, I decided to cover it up. So I bought a color that had a green base. I put it on and let it process. The results: my hair was steel grey and green! I just laughed. Needless to say, I fixed the color and went back and studied the color chart better.

I had a client I double processed to a level 9. It came out perfectly every time, until one day, her hair turned different shades of pink, blue, green and lavender – you know, Easter egg-colored spots all over her head! Yes, I was able to balance that all out with various shades on each spot to correct the tone. That worked fine. However, when she came in for her next visit, the colored spots returned! At that point, we decided to take her back to her natural level 7 color and foil. PS: I could never figure out what made her hair those beautiful Easter colors!

My boss once made me do a body wrap in the bathroom. Somehow we got overbooked and she couldn’t say no to money. It was awful, and I quit the next day!

My skin care instructor decided to go get her hair done, so she left us without an instructor for the day. With our newfound spare time, one of the girls decided to wax my eyebrows. So I let her, and sure enough, she left me with one eyebrow afterwards! AND I had a blind date that night, too! Yes, the eyebrow grew back, but I only wanted to do hair after that experience!

One day, my instructor walked up to a client with a lollipop in his mouth and said, “Remind you of anything?” Her response? “Last night.”

One day, everything went crazy. A rat ran out from under a display shelf, and a client tried to CATCH it, but it ended up on his back! The client was freaking out, and my boss ran out to see what was going on—and the rat jumped off of the client and into the box my boss was holding!

I was using a new color remover a few years back. Since it was new to me, I was careful to follow directions and do everything step by step so I could take blue/black hair to a nice shade of orange. I was in such awe of the product and how well it worked that I neglected to read the rest of the directions, namely the fact that I shouldn’t use products containing sulfates. So I rinsed off the product and did a soap cap to remove more color. To my amazement, the second my mixture touched the hair, it turned blue/black AGAIN! Thankfully, my client was a hairdresser who was just as shocked as I was!

This is something I’ll NEVER forget. Once, I complimented my client on her earrings. She leaned in toward me and gestured to the client in the next to the left and said, “See the woman in Lisa’s chair?” When I nodded, she whispered, “I got these earrings from her husband last night.” OMG! I was very young and could not believe what I had just heard! Now after more than 40 years in this business, nothing shocks me anymore!

One day, one of my classmates picked me to be her “client” for a makeup demo. After she was done, another student pulled me aside and told me that somehow, my classmate managed to make me look like “a porcelain doll and prostitute all in one.” I looked in the mirror and she was right; I looked really, really creepy! But I didn’t want to offend her so I left it on most of the day.

About three years ago, a girl came in wanting burgundy color all over, but she had streaks of green Manic Panic in her hair while the rest was a dirty, dishwater blonde. I thought the green would come out a mousey brown if I put red directly on it, so I did a bleach bath on the green sections. But instead of it pulling the green out, it made the green brighter and turned some of her virgin hair yellow! She could’ve done an ad for Sprite! I had no choice but to just put the red over everything anyway, and thank God it worked! It was the best burgundy color ever!

One day, my old boss decided to prank call me while I was working the front desk. She was pretending to be a lady who was trying to get the smell of perm out of her hair with laundry detergent. After 15 or so minutes of this “client” asking me dumb questions about laundry detergent, I finally copped a little attitude—which is not normal for me—and said, “Ma’am, I don’t know anyone on this earth who would have the nerve to put laundry detergent on their hair. And being that you got that perm done yesterday, I’m positive you just ruined it, laundry detergent or not.” After hanging up the phone, I went to my boss’s office and let her know we were probably going to receive a complaint call. Suddenly, she and a few fellow stylists fell to the floor laughing! It was pretty funny when I knew what they did!

In beauty school, my fellow classmates wanted to try out a new, highly-pigmented copper red with foils of blonde on my natural level 7 ash blonde hair. While the colors were processing, they saw it wasn’t turning out the way they planned, so the foils were left in too long. I ended up with construction cone orange new growth, hot pink mid-shaft and ends and platinum white highlights! I ended up going to a salon to get it fixed, and I told the stylist, “Do whatever you can to fix it! I’ll be happy as long as I don’t end up having to go black.” It ended up more of a ginger red with gray highlights.

I’ll never forget the time my boss came out from the back and stared us down as she held up a plastic cap that had been through the dryer. I boldly admitted I did it and started laughing so hard! It ended up looking like a stiff plastic board!

One day, I was shampooing a client’s hair and when I put the hose down, I forgot to turn the water off. The water splashed all over my client’s face and clothes, and she was completely soaked. All I could do was ask if she wanted a towel. And funnier still, it happened to her twice—once by me and then by another student!
