I love everything I see you do. I would sweep the hair at your chair just to watch you create the things you do! I would love to sit with you and get in your head to learn how you come up with your creative techniques and ideas for the runway and photo shoots. I think you are THE BEST in our industry right now, as far as I am concerned, and I hope to get to meet you one day. YOU ROCK!

Love,

You have been such an inspiration to me! From being my hairstylist, to being my boss, to winning Shear Genius—you’re amazing! Thank you for helping me make some of my greatest dreams come true, including some I didn’t even know I had. My experiences at P!ay Hair Lounge have been life changing. I love the salon. It is the biggest part of my life and every day I leave feeling like I’ve grown up a bit more. Thank you for that.

I’m sure you’ve heard this a lot, but I really love the work you do! You are inspiration for this very young stylist to go out there and “do it!” I’ve been told so many times that I am too young and no one will take me seriously. But I really feel the words you write and your belief in the industry has kept me going. I now teach for Joico/ISO and I command the attention of a room when I walk in. All the stylists listen and know I am in love with what I do. Thank you for being an ambassador to all things hair! You have helped me become a better version of myself by inspiring me to go further. You are awesome!!

You have all shaped me so much as a stylist, giving me the foundation I needed to build upon when I made my move to the big city of Chicago. Since I’ve been here, I’ve had to reach back to those fundamental things I learned when I was in school and use them every day. Because of you three women I can say I have a tremendous understanding of the science of hair, and I have the confidence to go after my dreams. Thank you.

I’m always so inspired when I see a man like you who has done so much for our industry and seems to have so much more to give.  You always appear to be so humble. I think my desire to do what I love and love what I do has somehow grown because of your passion for not only our industry, but also for those who we as professionals provide for.

I would like to thank you for the faith you instilled in me, as well as for your belief in hairdressers everywhere. You taught me that hairdressers need to embrace all hair types and not be afraid to be of the artistic challenges of each kind. You truly inspired and mentored not only my skills, but also my spirit.

You were at the first hair show I’ve ever been to. I remember you picked me out of the crowd—and I’m someone who’d rather hide than be on stage—but you made me feel so comfortable. I’ve followed you ever since. Thank you for everything!

You inspired me in the 1970′s with your innovative perm wraps and retail products.  It took 15 years for those styles to reach my part of West Virginia, but when they did, I was one of the few who knew how to do them! I still use perm wraps you taught 25 years ago. Thanks for everything!

You have revolutionized the industry and made it what it is today. You brought us great geometric shapes and precision cutting, along with fantastic blow drying and styling. Vidal, you have been my inspiration all these years. I’m forever grateful to you for all that you have done and are still doing.

I want to thank you for bringing me to your salon when I was little, because doing so set me on my path to becoming a hairdresser today. I remember sitting there watching you roll rollers or perm rods as I asked questions like, “Why do you do that?” You would always explain things to me with a smile and eagerness. I watched you with your clients and saw how much they loved you (they loved me too) and respected you. Grandmom, I want to thank you and tell you I love you and cherish the memories you gave me. I have your shears and razor, and I’m going to mount them on a plaque with your last license in your honor because you are the one who introduced me to this wonderful and fulfilling industry. Thank you, Grandmom. I love you very much and will hold these memories close to my heart.

That’s What She Said » behindthechair.com

In beauty school, my fellow classmates wanted to try out a new, highly-pigmented copper red with foils of blonde on my natural level 7 ash blonde hair. I was turning a color glove right side out, so I placed it to my mouth and blew in air to get the fingers to come out of the twisted glove. Several years ago, I had a level 3 client come in wearing a beautiful, white, silk jacket she had just purchased and was in love with.
